  Selfish Whales: Enjoy the Weather.

AUGUST/2011 – I regularly peruse the site If You Make It ‘cause they offer free indie and punk albums for download. Most of the albums available are good. Some are above average. But, the Selfish Whales’ “Enjoy the Weather” album on the site is absolutely amazing. Throw-your-hands-up-in-the-air, flop-to-the-ground-and-do-that-weird-Three-Stooges’-run-on-the-ground-while-laying-down-thing amazing.

This seven-piece band from Bloomington, Indiana could probably best be lumped into the category of “shoegazer/twee pop band” with the likes of Tullycraft and many of the bands on K Records. Their music has that classic steady, mellow indie-rock hipster vibe that people seem to either love or be bored to tears by. I fall into the former category. I could listen to shoegazer/twee indie hipster tunes all day and would be a happy, happy man.

But, there is an honesty and urgency in the Selfish Whales’ music that makes it stand out. It gives me goosebumps when the singer questions, “Have I gotten any closer to where I should be, or is the path just as long on either side of me?” on the opening track (Tuesday Blues). The last track (I’ll Sing On It) is also a standout. With lyrics like, “I’ll be a whale/I’ll jump inside of myself/Haul me up in a bucket with a story to tell/It turns out down there it’s just dark as hell/and I got wet,” this song pugs a smile on my face every time I listen to it. There’s a cleverness here that is like lightning in a jar (and a bunch of other clichés that I won’t mention here).

This album was my favorite to come out last year (2010) and is rapidly making its way up my list of favorite albums of all time. At just over 30 minutes in length, Enjoy the Weather leaves me wanting more from the Selfish Whales. Unfortunately, the band is currently “on hiatus.” I hope that means that they’re just taking a break and will get back to the rocking soon.

Although, it begs the question: “is it better to put out one, ridiculously amazing album and disappear or put out one great album and a bunch of lesser albums that nobody really cares about?” What a conundrum. Of course, they could get together and record a slew of albums that are all as good as or better than “Enjoy the Weather”. I’m betting the latter is more likely with this band.

The Selfish Whales’ “Enjoy the Weather” can be downloaded for free here. You can donate money to the band through PayPal. I did and I recommend you do, too. Let them know that you love the album and maybe, just maybe they’ll put out another.
